Interview with Patrick
How come you joined tanzwut now and not from the start since you were already involved with corvus corax ? (I think....)
I was first in Corvus Corax, because the drummer called “Stahli” left the band earlier then Brandan left Tanzwut. But I work together with the band as a studiomusician since about two years.
Which type of music do you prefer: the Medieval music of Corvus Corax, or the hybrid music of Tanzwut?
I like it both the same. Its both high energy music and it is always something new. One day I am the guitarist and the next day I am a drummer. That’s great.
Did you ever imagined as a kid to get this far with one (or even 2) musicbands ?
Yes I did. I ever had the wish to be a musician and it was clear to me that it is hard work to be succsessfull. I rehearsed every day on the the guitar for hours. When I was 14 I started my first band. It was quiet extreme metalmusic. A lot of fun, but I wanted more…
Now I play in two succesfull bands and I am very happy with it.
Do you like listening to your own music ?
Normally I don’t listen to the Cds we made. When we are on tour or in the studio, I hear it every day. So I use the time between to listen to other music to see what happens new.
What goes through someone’s mind when standing on stage (and seeing a freaked out audience or one that doesn’t moves at all ? ), Do you look sometimes at the audience when standing on stage or do you just play your part ?
When we play the audience is mostly freaked out. We do our best so that the reactions are
Always great. I enjoy to see the people having a good time. The action-reaction principle…
Do you (and the other bandmembers) enjoy the attention you get when being in a group ? For example the asking for autographs ?
When I was new in the band it was a bit strange for me always being asked for autographs but
after a while it becomes normal. And yes I enjoy the attention and the people enjoy to talk to someone of the band. If we got enough time we always talk to the people. I think more bands should do that.
What kind of music do you listen to or inspires you ? which bands do you like ?
As an inspiration I take mostly classical music. But I think music is always an inspiration.
I like nearly all styles of music. Bands I enjoy to listen to are for example: Air, Chemical Brothers, Type-o-negative, The Beatles or even Carcass.
Who is the creative leader in Tanzwut? Or is the band more or less in agreement as to the direction the music will take for each release?
The hole band is involved into the creative process. Sometimes it takes a bit until everybody
Is satisfied with the result but it is important for us to work together on the the songs. Everybody got his own special part and the mix makes it special.
Which comes first: the music or the texts? Who is the primary composer? Who writes the texts?
Its always different. Sometimes you got a ready song and the melody inspires you for a lyrical
Idea and another time you got a text that leads you on a musical theme.
Since Tanzwut is more metal, with the addition of ‘modern’ instruments, do you think that continuing with the medieval costuming for Tanzwut concerts is a help or a hindrance to being accepted by metal fans? Or are you trying to draw more from the CC fan base instead of the metal fans?
The metalfans are satisfied of it and the gothicpeople as well. Its is our vision of
Energetic music. We don’t care if it could help us to wear special closes on stage. It’s a natural
Process of making the music and making the closes. We could never play that music wearing bluejeans and shirts. It would not fit.
Radiogoethe’s representative in the US is gathering support to possibly bring more German music to the states. Tanzwut has a following in Mexico; would the band be interested in playing various cities across the US on a German music tour ?
Absolutly. We are in touch with several people in the US and Mexico to play there as soon as possible. If anyone of the fans got an idea how to take us overseas please send us an email. Thanks for the support by the way.
Some German bands record in English, others don‘t. How do you feel about writing and recording in languages other than German? Do you think it would help the band draw listeners from other countries? Or do you think it would be compromising who you are.
Today its not so difficult to translate lyrics of a foreign language into the own. We could sing in English but we would not say it with our own words if you understand. For a special song like a coverversion or a song made together with an Englishspeaking artist it would be possible to sing in English but it would be a special.
What are your interests other than music? If you could not play music, what would you be doing? Is the music from tanzwut and/or corvus corax enough to live from or do you have to do a normal job also ?
I like to cook but I think I wouldn’t work as a cook. Mostly I cook Italian food. And yes we all can live from the music. Before I came in the band I worked in a kindergarten. I liked it but I am a musician and I can not work in a 9 to 5 job.
What has been your worst experience performing? The best experience?
If a concert was worse I try to find out what was the cause. And then I forget that concert.
But mostly the concerts are great. I really enjoy to be in Kaltenberg every year. The Mera Luna-Festival was great. This was really a hard day. We played quiet early on the Mera Luna and had in the evening three show on a medieval market. This day we where about 4 hours on stage.
What do you think of the new CD yourself ? is it following the style of the first 2 CD’s ? have you already worked on that CD ? if yes do you think that the change of bandmembers had some sort on influence on the outcome of the CD ?
I love it. The style changed a bit but it is still Tanzwut. Very heavy guitars thats what I like.
The new cd is more extreme. The heavy parts are heavier and the softer parts are softer then before. And yes we worked together on the songs. It is clear if you got two new bandmates (Norri and me) that the music changes. The new Lineup is very strong.
How do you prepare before going on stage, are you nervous or does it all go very relax and easy ?
When we are on tour the first concert struggles my nerves a bit. I am nervous because it’s a new show and everything has to go the right way. When the first show was good I am relaxed and enjoy to go on stage. I got no special rituals before entering the stage.
Have you visited some of the fan-websites and or the forums ? if yes how do you think of the fans you gained from far away country’s. ? Do they have a different point of view to what you are used to in Germany ? Does it go different, a concert before a germane crowed or one in another country ?
Every country is different. I get a lot of emails from the whole world.
And what do you think of the fact that people make these websites ? good for the popularity of the band or bad since you don’t control what is said about the bands ?
Its always great when people are interested in what we do. I would like to know what the fans in Russia talk about us. But I can not read the letters.
What is the one question you hope no interviewer will ever ask you? And what is the answer to that question?
This question…
Do you get the feeling we missed something important ? (if yes just add a question)
No. It where a lot of interesting questions and I enjoyed to answer you.
And perhaps a final remark towards the Dutch fans and the pour guys from the USA and other far away country’s that don’t have much chance in seeing you live.......
We do our best to visit your countries as soon as possible. Feel free to help us. Maybe it will
Not take so long until we meet each other.
Thanx for taking the time to go through these questions.
Greets and good wishes
