OOMPH! - Rohstoff
Saturday, 11 August 2007

The only thing raw in this, the first DVD release from these 13+ year veterans of the German music scene, is the energy. Very well-produced, and packed full, this polished release gives the impression that the guys have been waiting a while for the opportunity to give us a live DVD, and they didn't want to waste the chance. In addition to a full-length concert, Rohstoff offers nearly every video released by the band to date, making-of documentaries for more than half of these videos, as well as interviews with the band members, totaling more than 4 hours of material.

The concert itself is a recording of a single show in Berlin during the recent GlaubeLiebeTod tour, and the set list is heavily weighted towards the most recent albums. The recording quality visually is excellent, and while there are a reasonable amount of crowd shots, happily, most of the camera time is spent on the band itself. Sound quality is also very good, if not quite at studio levels. The band gives a superb performance, and the energy level remains high, and Dero's vocal quality remains strong, through to the end of the 22-song set. The stage show centers on classic Dero insanity, with the rest of the band as a more static, but still intense, framework, and the whole backed by the expected lights and smoke.

The bonus material is 15 videos, spanning nearly 10 years of the band's history, 9 making-of videos from the past three studio albums, and a current interview, enough material to justify the cost, even without the main concert.

There are a few additional items some fans may wish had been included, most notably any sort of subtitles for the bonus materials. Of course, the full-length concert and 15 music videos are still a great value even if you don't speak German and can't fully appreciate the interviews and making-ofs. Fans who prefer Oomph!'s earlier music may find the set list somewhat sparse for old favorites, and a couple of the oldest music videos were also skipped. However, with everything that is already included, I really can't complain.

All told, a quality product, and a great value. Respekt, Jungs -- sehr gut gemacht! As Flux says in the interview, this DVD can't (and is not meant to) replace the live concert experience, but for those of us like myself, who have not yet had that opportunity, it can at least tide us over for a little while longer.
