oomph! - Ego
Ego is OOMPH!’s seventh studio album. Also, Ego is the album that introduced me to the amazing music that OOMPH! has to offer. I had always heard about OOMPH! because I had been a dedicated listener to Eisbrecher and Rammstein. After listening to only the first three tracks of this album, I already knew I had stumbled upon something great. After I had finished listening to the whole album, I was mad I had not listened to OOMPH! any sooner. Fans of Rammstein, Eisbrecher, or Megaherz are sure to be pleased, because this is a very industrial album.

Ego is obviously a much underrated album. The whole album only produced one single/video (Supernova), while later albums, such as GlaubeLiebeTod, have produced up to four. Songs from Ego are seldom played live either (just take a look at the Rohstoff DVD track listing). One unique thing about Ego is that half the tracks are in German, while the other half are in English (7 German, 6 English, 3 instrumentals), so you get the best of both worlds. Personally, I prefer Dero’s German singing voice over his English singing voice, but they are both great.

Nine albums down and two years later, Ego still remains as my favorite OOMPH! album. I have heard each and every OOMPH! album inside and out and none have yet to top Ego. Based on my own experience, I believe Ego is the perfect album to begin listening to if you have been considering giving OOMPH! a shot. My top 5 tracks from Ego are:  Supernova, Bitter, Viel Zu Tief, Who You Are, and Kontrollverlust. Ego is not a hard album to find either, unlike OOMPH!’s earlier albums.

To those already familiar with OOMPH!’s work, I would say this album is what you would get if you mixed Plastik and Wahrheit oder Pflicht together. It has the nice keyboarding/sampling of Plastik and the awesome heavy guitars of Wahrheit oder Pflicht. Ego should be in any German music fan’s CD collection, or even any industrial rock fan’s CD collection. Give Ego a shot, you won’t be disappointed.
