It's not up to the burner, it's up to the CD player.
Some players can play mp3, but most can't.
If your CD player doesn't say that it supports mp3s,
then maybe the burner converts them by itself.

I don't mean making an MP3 CD. It can make a normal audio CD (for a CD player) without converting the songs to wav first. If the burner does it automatically, I don't know about it and it does it really fast.

@skylfit: Is .wav the "true sound" file format for music? I always thought so because .wav doesn't use any compression that I know of, and makes for some very large file sizes. So I guess the file type wouldn't be the cause for any loss in quality.

I don't know what you mean by "true sound" but wav's are uncompressed, full spectrum audio. Then you have stuff like monkey audio which is compressed full spectrum audio, and standard mp3s which are compressed, lossy audio.

Yes, I meant uncompressed and non-lossy...

I didn't quite know what to call it. I think I'll look up some info about audio file formats and enlighten myself

the true sound is *.raw files, so a burning program has even to convert wav files once more to *.raw files (which are slighlty larger than .wav files, about 1%).

If you burn mp3 files on cd, your programm converts them directly from mp3 to raw.

it does'n matter if you first convert your mp3's to wave and burn them or directly burn them, there will be no loss in quality.

320 kBit MP3s are ultra high quality (i think compression about 3:1 ?)
you NEVER have to be afraid because of quality issues !

You needed a 10,000 Dollar Soundsystem to hear an imrpovement to an regular CD (if at all) !

Personally, i convert all my cds to 192 kBit MP3s because that's really enough for my 300 Dollar Sound System, and it's really very good quality.
(and 7:1 comression = ~ 8 MB per Song)

Thanks for this information, it's very good to know I usually make my MP3s at 160 to save some space on my hard drive, because if I really want the perfect quality at some time then I will simply play the CD and not the MP3s. I can tell the difference since my speakers were $400, but I think 160 is good enough normally.
