Many people outside Bulgaria asked me what is the most popular music here. Unfortutnately, many band members asked me the same question Some people told me "Oh, Turkish and Greek music is nice" when I told them that "Chalga" is like them. Here is what you'll find about this "genre":

Chalga is a form of Bulgarian popular music drawing from Balkan folk traditions and incorporating Arab, Turkish, Greek, and Gypsy (in fact mostly gypsy) influences, as well as motifs from Balkan traditional music, flamenco and klezmer music.

Often indistinguishable from Bulgarian pop music, it remains popular with the "proletariat" as music played in dance clubs and pubs. It is denigrated as a second-rate musical genre originating from foreign sources, and is known for repetitious themes, sexually explicit lyrics, and hook-laden dance rhythms. Its commercial exploitation has resulted in a vibrant night scene, especially in Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria), as well as many televised videos featuring extravagantly glamorized singers. Azis, a cross-dressing gypsie, epitomizes the deliciously cheap and addictive quality of the genre.

It's kinda softly explained. This gypsie - Azis is the most popular "singer" in my country. For example, at his biggest live show there were nearly 15 000 people. Some rock bands like Whitesnake, Deep Purple had 11 000, 14 000... I'm not a fan of those bands but it's a shame! Now, after you are totally terrified from this stupid homosexual-moneymaking image, which is more stupid even than Marylin Manson's image, it's time to take a look at the other biggest stars here and decide if this "music" really worths and think about what CD with Bulgarian music you'll buy when you come to Bulgaria This "guy" was "giving birth" on the stage, kissing bodybuilders nad so many things that I just don't wanna say. What worse than this stupid porn image to rule over the country...? More than 50% of the people here listen to this shit and dances on the tables... lyrics about sex, money, cars, which make 13-14 yo girls to get drunk in the stupid discoclubs and have sex, and many other shitty things that are not really apprpriate for their age... believe me, it's terrifying in the discoclubs here... :? Their owners don't care that those girls and boys get drunk from 2 beers and give em more and more alcochol. It's prohibited but who cares? So, here are the most popular Bulgarian female "singers". I hope you won't make the mistake as many people ouside Bulgaria do - to think that this is our native folklore. oh... my.... well.... if i can get the images out of my brain, and just listen to the music, its not so terrible. he doesn't have the best voice, but the music itself is not all that bad. i'm not gonna go searching for any of his cd's though

its a shame that his fame is based on sex, one way or another, but sex sells... even alternative sex. and like you said, he's not the first to do this, there have been several in the past making their money on their outrageous image.

i'm sorry to hear he's the most popular singer in the country... but the newness will wear off one day and he'll fade away... hopefully
