Nachtmahr 2005/12/15 12:43
It's been out a few weeks now, so what do you think of this album?

Personally I think it is amazing. If you like songs like Kafka, Saitenspiel, 89, Du siehst aus wie immer and the Kleine ?ngste and Winterreise CDs, you'll love this album. It's kind of an extended and improved version of the Winterreise MCD. Very slow, dark and melancholic. Favourite tracks currently include Kinderkreuzzug, Dorinas Bild, Grabenkrieg and Die Ruhe selbst, but I just got it so that might change.

Anyway, this is a must have if you like Janus, which you should. Maybe not the best album to start with though. Definately my favourite release 2005.

Nachtmahr is my first Janus album and goddamn I'm impressed!

Before that the only Janus songs I've heard were the ones downloadable from their site and they alone got me hooked to the band.

Definitely worth every cent I paid for it. Not only is the music simply awesome, the CD case is the best I've seen.

Well now that it has finally turned up, I guess I can add my 2?.

I've heard it twice so far, and of course it's just fantastic. I know I definitely like it more than Auferstehung which, excluding Vater as I haven't heard it, is my least favourite. I'm not yet sure whether I prefer Nachtmahr over the amazing Schlafende Hunde yet. I imagine I will though.

My favourite song at the moment is "Dorinas Bild".

Second favourite release for 2005, after Opeth's Ghost Reveries.

Personally, I found it almost disappointing. It was far below the standards of Schlafende Hunde and Auferstehung. The Winterreise EP's covers are vastly superior to anything on Nachtmar .

I think RIG's voice was way off on a lot of these songs and some of the music is just plain old boring in a way. I love the classical sound and simply cannot get enough of Winterreise, but I'm glad they're going to go back to a more electronic approach. RIG just doesn't have the voice to sing like this for an entire album (and if you've heard him live, you'll wonder whether he has the voice to sing like that at all ).

They're my favourite band, easily, but I have no problems acknowledging that this was a pretty sub-par effort (though the bar is so, so high for Janus).

Die Ruhe Selbst, Anita Spielt Cello and Grabenkrieg are all really nice. Was uns Zerbricht is (still ) fantastic and I quite like the Kadavarstern cover, too.

I still think it's great. It's not better than Auferstehung, but it's not far behind. Dorinas Bild is one of my favourite Janus tracks. It is way better than Winterreise in all aspects and I might even like it more than Vater. I haven't really decided yet. In no way a poor effort. If I had to complain about anything, it would be the more light-sounding vocals of songs like Anita spielt Cello. Not sure if they're my favourite band, but this is nevertheless a high-class album.

I do like Auferstehung; not an overly massive amount (though ?berleben is damned good), but I've found SH and Nachtmahr to just be a lot better. I guess I've found more "hooks" in them. Hopefully I can get my mitts on a copy of Vater, as I still haven't heard that. Nor Winterreise.
They're not my favourite band, but definitely in my top 10. Looking forward to Grabenkrieg sometime in the next...whenever.
